The signs are clear

I think the signs are clear that the world as we know it about to end. For one thing, why else would they be making all those movies and TV series about impending disaster unless it was to help us prepare for it.

Now my thinking is that it will be either a “Revolution” type world or some form of zombies apocalypse. On the plus side both of these give you a good chance of survival - assuming you take the below precautions - and mean you are not competing with genetically strong mutant humans for survival.

Be a survivor

The most important thing to achieve when the end of the world - as we know it - happens, is ensuring your survival. Now this might sound easy, but it is important to remember that it is likely that somewhere between 10-90% of the population will be wiped out - these numbers are based on current TV series and movies.

So what are the keys to survival:

  • Pick a stronghold - ideally somewhere easily defendable, with food and other necessary - alcoholic - provisions. Basically, make friends at your local pub.
  • Know your way out of a tight spot - I don’t mean fighting or anything like that unless you have the build of a nightclub bouncer. I will be relying on a singer to guide me..

  • Look out for your loved ones - after all you need someone to watch you back, and you never know you may be able to trade them for a camel with at a later stage.

  • Have a weapon to hand - this is only really relevant if the world goes down the zombie route. If it does, be careful with timing, because unless it is the zombi apocalypse you probably shouldn’t walk around the streets with heavy artillery. Watch the news and if they start talking about strange virus’ and the dead rising, make your move.

Picking a new job

Now this will be an important life choice, as similar to the current world it will be incredibly difficult to change jobs in

Management

This won’t be like today’s management jobs. I admit there will be betrayal and backstabbing to get to the top, that won’t change. This will however, be the literal kind of backstabbing rather than the figurative kind we have grown used to. Keep in mind that if you do end up leading the new world order, chances are someone will want to kill you and take you place. Always a good reason to have loved ones around.

Underling

In all honesty, this is the only thing worst than being in management, it is basically salvery. You have to do all the work, fight all the battles, but get very little of the benefits, they are taken by those at the top.

Free spirited mercenary

Best of luck with this one if you think you are up for it. Keep in mind this is what the TV and movie have been preparing you for. I’ll admit it does seem cool, and the wemon are hot. But they never show the hero sleeping in a ditch, walking for days between towns or trying to find enough food to live on during the endless walking.

Added to which there seems “hero’s” are required to regularly perform selfless feats of heroism, a dangourus occupation at best. I would suggest leaving this, to the Bear Grylls’ of the world.

Unskilled labourer

This is the future currently staring me in the face. My current day job is web development and that is likely to dry up once the internet stops working and the dead rise.

Your biggest concern here is that some management type will think that you would make a good underlying. The only hope we have left is to try and upskill, which leads me to “Skilled workforce”

And here we come to the meat of it. If you want to suvive in the new world and hopefully turn a tidy profit, without being in constant danger of enslavement or being required to be the hero whenever danger presents itself, this is the job for you.

Fortunately for me, the rules state that you need to call “dibs” on your occupation of choice, within your given circle of friends, so do this ASAP so you don’t miss out.

The main purpose of this post is to lay claim to the role of: “blacksmith, with a focus on aluminum castings”. Now that this has been clearly stated, all that is leaft is actually having the skills when the time arrives. After all you don’t want a bad review from management, those things never go well.
